September 14, 2000|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

A 15-year-old Ellicott City girl who set herself on fire and stabbed herself Tuesday remained in critical condition yesterday at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Howard County police said.

The girl, a sophomore at Mount Hebron High School whose name is being withheld because she is a juvenile, was taken to the hospital by MedEvac after she doused herself with a flammable liquid in her Ellicott City residence and set herself on fire, emergency personnel said.

After the girl's mother put out the flames, the girl stabbed herself in the abdomen with a kitchen knife, police said.

Her mother also was taken to Bayview Medical Center with burns to her hands, but police say that the injuries were not serious and that she was to have been released yesterday.
