Great Frederick Fair

For a traditional county fair with plenty of livestock, 4-H and home arts exhibits, food, midway rides and live entertainment, come to the 138th Great Frederick Fair - spread out over 64 acres tomorrow through Sept. 23 in the heart of downtown Frederick. Throughout the nine-day award-winning event, fairgoers will be able to see and, in some cases, pet a cow, llama, sheep, goat, rabbit and chicken. New this year is a Texas Longhorn cattle show. Other activities include a demolition derby, harness racing, a draft horse and mule show, a tractor pull and concerts, featuring among others Mark Wills, 7:30 p.m. Saturday; Jo Dee Messina, 7 p.m. Sunday; and Loretta Lynn, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22.

The fair site is at 797 E. Patrick St. Hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Admission is $4, free for those under age 10. Admission to grandstand entertainment ranges from $8 to $25. For information, call 301-663-5895; tickets, 301-695-3928.

Field of Screams

If you dare to take the spine-tingling journey on this year's Field of Screams Haunted Hayride near Lancaster, Pa., you'll meet Fester, the field's caretaker, as he clings to his life-support system. You'll also encounter creatures and ghouls that will make you cringe and shudder with their very presence. If you survive the Hayride, the Den of Darkness Horror Barn will weaken even the strongest souls. Packed with all new special effects, the three-story horror barn will make you tremble as you walk through the dark halls and ghost-infested passageways.

The 8th annual Field of Screams, off Route 30's Mountville Exit near Lancaster, Pa., opens tomorrow and runs through Oct. 29. Hours are 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays. Admission is $8 for the field and $8 for the den or $14 for both; $5, $5 and $9 for seniors and children ages 10 and under. Group rates are also available. For information, call 717-285-7748.
