Southwest to add daily nonstop flights to three destinations

Southwest Airlines has announced daily roundtrip nonstop flights from Baltimore-Washington International Airport to Albuquerque, N.M., and Salt Lake City and an additional flight to Raleigh-Durham, N.C. The services are scheduled to begin Dec. 10. The additional North Carolina route brings Southwest's number of daily roundtrip nonstop flights between BWI and Raleigh-Durham to five.

Southwest, BWI's busiest carrier, operates 110 nonstop departures from BWI daily with direct or connecting service to 25 cities. BWI is Southwest's eighth-busiest airport in terms of daily departures.

Down syndrome benefit run/walk slated Sept. 24

The annual Northrop Grumman-BWI Airport 5K Run and 3K Family Walk to benefit children with Down syndrome is scheduled at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 24. The course will travel along BWI and Northrop Grumman tarmacs, and awards for male and female runners will be given in seven age categories.

"School Challenge Awards" will be presented to the schools with the most paid participants. MARC is donating round-trip passes for class field trips between the BWI rail station and Union Station in Washington.

Registration fees for the 5K run are $12 for adults, $5 for senior citizens and children under 15 if submitted before Sept. 20.

Fees are $15 and $8 after Sept. 20. Fees for the 3K walk are $7 and $5 before Sept. 20, and $10 and $8 after.

Plane-pull event to help Special Olympics Maryland

More than 60 teams of 20 members each will try be the fastest to pull a 72-ton Boeing 727 cargo plane 12 feet at the third Maryland Transportation Authority Police Plane Pull scheduled Saturday at BWI.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the airport's Air Cargo Complex and will benefit Special Olympics Maryland. Last year's pull raised $80,000 for Maryland's 9,000 athletes.

Admission and parking are free. Park in the Gold Lot off Dorsey Road and use the free shuttle to the event site.

No parking will be available at the air cargo complex.

Also, airport officials are prohibiting coolers, pets, smoking, bicycles, in-line skates and skateboards.
