Fire officials probe 2 incidents

Authorities are investigating a fire and an "attempted burning" in Eldersburg late Wednesday that appear to be suspicious, according to fire officials.

Firefighters from Sykesville, Gamber and Liberty Road in Baltimore County battled a blaze at a vacant two-story house in the 1400 block of Liberty Road about 9:15 p.m., bringing it under control within about 15 minutes.

The wooden structure had been boarded up and unoccupied for at least 10 years, fire marshals said. Because of its condition, no damage estimate was assessed.

About 90 minutes later, firefighters from Sykesville were called to two-story Colonial-style home in the 5900 block of Cecil Way. The homeowner returned after being away a few days and smelled what she believed to be gas in her house, authorities said.

Firefighters investigated and discovered several pieces of furniture throughout the house had been doused with a flammable liquid, fire marshals said.

Damage was estimated at $2,000.
