Harford County

September 05, 2000|By FROM STAFF REPORTS

As tough as it is to be a repeat champion, C. Milton Wright's girls team looks like a solid choice to run the table and win titles again.

Except for a mid-season setback to Middletown in the open-class division of the Bull Run at Hereford last season, C. M. Wright was all but unapproachable.

The Mustangs took the Harford County crown by sweeping the first five places in the race. They won the tough 4A East Regional by going 1-3-5-7-8. In the Anne Arundel Invitational, team members finished 1-2-4-5-7.

The only real stumble came in the state Class 4A championship when team leader Kacie Remeto, winner of 10 of 11 races to that point, was jostled, tripped and pushed to the ground and finished 34th. Still, the team won.

Joining Remeto are fellow seniors Cara Wettlaufer, the state indoor mile champion, and Heather McHugh, and junior Jessica Hepner. The only scorer to graduate was Erin Shockley

John Carroll, led by Jessica Kearney, looms as the second-best team among the county girls.

The county boys title appears headed for C. M. Wright, too, as the team looks to improve upon its fifth-place finish at the state meet last fall. Gone from last year's county champs are Jake Still and Mike Peterson, but Joe Pedraza, Pat Bailey, Aaron Smith and Matt Stamm are all proven.

Bel Air, with Will Murdock, and North Harford, with Paul Badders, could make it interesting, but their teams probably don't have the depth to push C. M. Wright. -- From staff reports
