MARYLAND SCENE

September 03, 2000|By Sloane Brown

Dr. Joe Hairston was greeted with a room full of smiles, at a reception welcoming the new superintendent of Baltimore County Public Schools. The event was hosted by Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president of University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and The Links, Inc., Patapsco River Chapter. Some 300 local folks, many of them educators, filed into the UMBC Ballroom. They greeted the county's first African-American superintendent in a receiving line, as the Milford Mill Academy Jazz Band played in the background.

Among those providing the warm welcome: Carolyn Cole, event chair; Flossie Johnson, A. Lois DeLaine, Jennye Patterson, and Joan Powell, event committee members; Rayna Woodford, Links, Inc., Patapsco River chapter president; Camay Murphy, Baltimore City school board member; Cynthia M. Hill, UMBC assistant vice provost; Michael Wise, UMBC student; David Lloyd, Middle River Middle School principal; Carolyn Smith, Halstead Academy principal; Dan Capozzi, Winand Elementary School principal; Dr. John Lee, UMBC director of urban teacher education; Reva Lewie, Baltimore County commissioner for arts and sciences; and Joan Brown, consultant for Achievement First.
