Thumbs up: Receiver Jermaine Lewis continues to star in training camp, catching a 35-yard pass over Duane Starks for a touchdown during a two-minute drill. Lewis, though, has yet to carry that over to the games, getting shut out so far this preseason.
Thumbs down: After colliding with guard Richard Mercier on a screen, defensive tackle Sam Adams used a two-hand shove to knock Mercier to the ground after the play. Coach Brian Billick immediately stuck a finger in Adams' face, saying, "I don't want to ever see you do that again."
The longer, the better: Quarterback Tony Banks threw the two longest passes of the day, hitting Lewis and Brandon Stokley each 30 yards down the field. But Banks sputtered on the 10-yard out routes, as Lynde Washington and Rod Woodson both deflected away his throws.
Over and out: While Starks showed great recovery at times at left cornerback, he missed twice on finishing off plays. After Starks failed to knock down two passes, Lewis and Billy Davis were on their way for touchdowns.
Trainer's room: Running back Jamal Lewis (left elbow) participated in his first practice in two weeks but did not run in contact drills. ... Running back Jay Graham (high right ankle strain) suited up but left the field less than an hour into practice. He was attempting to work in individual drills. ... Starting fullback Chuck Evans (torn triceps) and reserve tight end Pedro Edison (right knee) did not practice. ... Reserve linebacker Calvin Wilkinson is day-to-day with a pulled quadriceps. ... Starting receiver Patrick Johnson (broken clavicle), starting outside linebacker Peter Boulware (shoulder) and reserve receiver Marcus Nash (chin) all worked on conditioning exercises off to the side.
Quotable: "That's understandable; we're late in practice. Hell, I'd like to take a couple of pops at a few of these guys, too. And maybe one or two would like to take a pop at me." - Billick on Adams roughing up Mercier.
Today's schedule: Full-team practice 8:45-11:10 a.m.; special teams, 3 -4 p.m.
Countdown to the season opener: 20 days.
