Tigers update
These teams should have but a vague recollection of each other. They haven't met since early April in the second series of the year. The Tigers were swept in three games, including a 14-10 loss on April 7. How much has changed with the Orioles since that game? Four of the five pitchers used aren't with the club, including starter Calvin Maduro, who's on the 60-day disabled list. Detroit lost the next night, 2-1, in 10 innings on a single by Delino DeShields, and 11-6 in the final game when Mercedes allowed three earned runs in five innings. Juan Gonzalez, acquired from the Texas Rangers over the winter, hasn't impacted the AL Central race like the Tigers had hoped. He entered yesterday batting .281 with 16 homers and 40 RBIs, and seems certain of leaving as a free agent after the season. Bobby Higginson ranked fourth in doubles with 32 and led in outfield assists with 14. Before yesterday, he led the Tigers with 21 homers and had 111 hits and was batting .343 at Comerica Park.
