Crab Days in St. Michaels
Celebrate the Chesapeake Bay's favorite crustacean - the blue crab - this weekend during the 18th annual Crab Days at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum in St. Michaels.
For two days, blue crabs will be served in every way imaginable - steamed crabs, fried crabs, crab cakes and crab soups, to name a few. There also will be plenty of hot dogs, French fries, corn-on-the-cob, ice cream and home-baked treats.
In addition to food, the museum is cooking up some fun activities. Festival-goers can watch and take part in demonstrations of various traditional Chesapeake seafood-industry activities, including pulling up crab pots and working trotlines. And they can observe craftspeople making bushel baskets, crab pots and nets; talk to crab pickers about their lives and industry issues; take a ride aboard the 51-foot Mister Jim, a replica of an old oyster buyboat; and cheer on participants in the annual crab race.
Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on the museum grounds, Mill Street. Crab races are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Admission, which includes tours of all museum buildings, is $7.50, $6.50 seniors, $3 ages 6-17 and free under age 6. Food is priced separately. Call 410-745-2916.
