Camp update

July 30, 2000|By Jamison Hensley

Thumbs up: Although yesterday's non-contact intrasquad scrimmage was more for the fans than for the coaches' evaluations, quarterback Tony Banks was in a groove, connecting on his first 13 passes, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Lewis. The purple team, which was comprised of mainly starters, edged the white team, 13-12.

Who was that?: Tight end Ryan Collins, one of the few Ravens without his name on the back of his uniform, caught two passes over the middle for 20 yards.

Trainer's room: Backup strong safety Anthony Poindexter, who sat out last year after knee surgery, was given yesterday off to rest. ... Starting defensive tackle Sam Adams, who suffered a burner in his neck Thursday, resumed practicing.

Quotable: "It's incomprehensible that a rookie would hold out for an entire year. Now the question is: Is he going to do it at the 11th hour and come onto this team and in doing so, betray his teammates and his team. Or is he going to get his butt in here in the next week or so and make a run at this thing. Unless he ... truly believes that he's going to sit out the entire year - which is unlikely - then why not come in now?" -Ravens coach Brian Billick on rookie holdout Travis Taylor.

Today's schedule: Off day.

Countdown to the season opener: 35 days.
