Quote: "He makes the plays without the flash. He gives a good at-bat without the flash. I'm glad I have him, and there are lots of New York Mets who are glad as well."-- Mets manager Bobby Valentine said on shortstop Mike Bordick, acquired Friday from the Orioles.

It's a fact: Houston finally reached a three-game winning streak last week in their 99th game of the season. That's the deepest any team has gone into the season before winning three in a row since the 1985 Pirates needed 145 games to do so.

Who's hot: The Cubs have won 14 of their past 18 games.

Who's not: Houston All-Star Shane Reynolds, bothered by a sore back, left yesterday's game after giving up four hits and four runs. He has given up 53 hits, 40 earned runs and 16 walks in his past 32 2/3 innings, and has an 11.02 ERA in his past seven starts.

On deck: Stan Belinda, most famous in Atlanta as the Pittsburgh Pirate who gave up the winning hit in Game 7 in the 1992 NLCS, cleared waivers and signed a one-year deal with the Braves. He'll be in uniform today when Houston visits.
