Laurel weekend

July 22, 2000|By Bob Pickering

Today: After a couple scratches, as many as a dozen fillies and mares could parade postward for the 37th running the of the Lady Baltimore Stakes.

The 1 1/8 -mile grass encounter attracted 17 distaffers, but three were withdrawn at scratch time. Two remain on the alternate list.

The $75,000 affair's likely favorite is Melody Queen, winner of only one race this year but a near miss in three straight graded stakes.

Orange Sunset, one of two fillies on the alternate list, could provide a serious challenge if she draws into the lineup.

Tomorrow: After an impressive victory in his debut, Donald J. Baker's Niner's Echo could wind up as favorite for Primer Stakes' third running.

The 5 1/2 -furlong dash, worth $50,000, is the first stakes attempt for eight of the nine 2-year-olds entered.
