Laurel weekend

July 15, 2000|By Bob Pickering

Today

In addition to the Grade I Frank J. DeFrancis Memorial Dash, Laurel Park has scheduled two other sprint stakes on the 11-race card.

The Mister Diz has lured 10 registered Maryland-breds that will vie for a $60,000 purse.

Two previous winners of this turf event - Tyaskin in '98 and Smart Sunny last year - are among the 10 entered but neither will go postward the favorite.

That honor is likely to go to Fortunate Stable's My Problem, a $35,000 claim by trainer Dale Capuano that will be testing turf for the first time.

Disco Rico will be the solid choice to win his second added-money event in a row when seven 3-year-olds parade postward in the Montpelier Stakes.

The $75,000 event will be contested at six furlongs over the main strip.

Disco Rico brings a 2-for-3 record into second running of the Montpelier. He's coming of a wire-to-wire victory in Monmouth Park's Jersey Shore Stakes, a $100,000, Grade III dash.

Other likely contenders are Max's Pal and Stormin Oedy, the place and show finishers behind the Valora Testerman-trained colt at the Monmouth Park oval.

Tomorrow

Ten promising 2-year-old fillies, all still seeking their second victory, will compete for a $50,000 purse in the Toddler Stakes.

The third running of the event will be contested at 5 1/2 furlongs over the main track.

Half the field remain unbeaten after their debut. They include Zonk, Medicine Bow, Carni's Luck, Xtra Heat and Market Flash.

The only filly in the field with stakes experience is Trustees Gray.

The remainder of the field includes Sea Dragoness, Conquistalee, Carly's Cloud and Lil Punkindo.
