Pilots identified in Navy jet crash

July 13, 2000

Two pilots killed in a crash Tuesday at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station were identified yesterday as Lt. Cmdr. Gareth A. Rietz of Cheney, Wash., and Lt. Raymond E. O'Hare of Palos Heights, Ill.

The two men, both 33, were killed as they were returning to the St. Mary's County base on a training mission aboard a T-38 Talon.

Rietz and O'Hare would have graduated in December from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School. They were in the middle of an 11-month course that offers instruction on supersonic techniques, aerobatics, formation, night and instrument flying and cross-country navigation.
