Family fair planned for reading program

Carroll County Public Library will hold a Summer Reading Program Family Fair from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Town Mall of Westminster.

The event will feature entertainment, demonstrations and activities and crafts for reading program participants and their families. Registration will be taken and reading incentives and prizes given.

Visitors will include the library mascot, Corky the Penguin, his buddy Sneaks, Chick-Fil-A's Doodles, the Cat in the Hat, Angelina Ballerina and the Berenstein Bears.

Scheduled entertainment includes Bob the Vid Tech from 10 a.m. to noon; a Baltimore Blast soccer player from noon to 2 p.m.; Jim Hossick's Education Rock at 1 p.m.; the magic of Roger Lindsay at 3 p.m.; Marshall's Melodies Karaoke from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; 98WYCR radio personality Captain Conners from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Caribbean dances and percussion by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Arts Excel program at 7 p.m.; Baltimore Ravens mascot from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and local rock band Second Thought at 8 p.m.

The reading program, Reading Rhythms, continues through Aug. 5 and is open to all ages. Registration is taken at all library branches.

Haines supporters to hold 11th annual family picnic

The Friends of Larry Haines will hold its 11th annual old-fashioned family picnic from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster. Haines is a state senator.

The event will include a patriotic theme and an "I Love America" rally; exhibits by the Maryland Army National Guard and the Maryland State Police Explorers; antique cars; and tours of the museum.

A program with patriotic music will be held at 5 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults; $5 for children ages 7 to 16; and free for 6 and younger.

Trip, puppet show highlight center's activities

The Carroll County Family Center, 10 Distillery Drive, Westminster, will offer activities for members this month.

July 18: Trip to Greenbrier State Park for swimming and games.

July 20: Puppet show at the county library.

July 27: Nutrition facts from Darlene Flaherty of the Carroll County Health Department.

Registration is required.

The center offers a number of services, including adult education, counseling, child care development, health care and education and parent/child activities.

Historian discusses county's Civil War ties

Fifty-six people attended the Carroll County Genealogical Society's annual banquet June 19.

Jay Graybeal, executive director of the Historical Society of Carroll County, spoke about Carroll County soldiers who fought in the Civil War. He showed slides of several men from the county and described how some families had members on both sides of the war.

Genealogical Society President Mariah Gilligan presented awards to volunteers Susan Bundy, Mary Ann Ashcraft, William Hiatt, Belva LaMotte, Harold Robertson, Ann Horvath, Robert Farver, Judy Wagner, Janet Colburn and Wayne Adams.

A surprise award was given to Gilligan for her dedication and contributions to the organization.
