Piney Run Nature Center offers wildlife programs

Piney Run Nature Center offers wildlife programs for all ages.

Beaver Country Kayak Lake Tour will be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday for ages 12 and older. Paddle around the lake with a naturalist. Wear clothing that can get wet. Life jackets will be provided. Cost is $10 for members and $12 for nonmembers.

Meet a Snake will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. The program is free for all ages. Volunteer Jack Norman will show a film about snakes and then will answer questions about the reptiles.

Kids 'N' Kayak lessons for ages 8 to 11 will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Wear clothing that can get wet and muddy and bring a water bottle and towel. Cost is $15.

Lake Shore Explore will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday for ages 5 and older (families are welcome). Learn about the small creatures that inhabit the waters along the lake's shore.

Summer Door Garden Swag workshop for ages 16 and older will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 18. Participants will use natural greens and silk flowers to create a swag on a floral cage for a moist, stable base. Cost of the workshop is $25 for members and $30 for nonmembers.

Timber Doodle Puppet Theater will be held at 11 a.m. July 21. The nature puppet show geared to young elementary age children will feature a craft, hike or hands-on activity. Cost is $2 per child.

Bear Branch center plans meetings, activities

Bear Branch Nature Center offers numerous club meetings and activities throughout the year.

Westminster Astronomical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the planetarium for a program on stars and telescopes. Interested stargazers are welcome.

Earthkids Club for children 8 to 13 will meet from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Thursday. This environmental club discusses a different environmental issue each month and uses crafts and activities to learn how to improve the environment. This month, a stream cleanup and hike will be held. Cost to participate is $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers.

Almost Full Moon Hike for all ages will be held from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday. Bring a small flashlight for a night hike around the trails of Hashawha. Cost is $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers.

Archery for Beginners will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. July 17 for all ages. Using a simple bow and arrow, participants will learn safety precautions and proper techniques for target shooting. Cost is $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers.

Piney Run Park offers summer canoeing lessons

Piney Run Park offers canoeing lessons this summer.

Instruction is given in the basics of canoe paddling and safety.

Participants must be 12 and older and know how to swim. Wear clothes that can get dirty and bring a water bottle and towel.

The cost is $15 per person or $25 for two.

Single-session classes will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 22 and Aug. 12 (bring a lunch).
