Ex-officer arrested after four-hour standoff

July 08, 2000

A former Anne Arundel County police officer was arrested in Savage last night after he allegedly threatened his girlfriend and a neighbor before barricading himself in his apartment for four hours.

Howard County police said that Douglas B. Dawson, 30, was home alone, apparently unarmed, when officers responded to a domestic assault call in the 8500 block of Commercial St. about 6:10 p.m. Dawson came out of the house until about 10 p.m., when he emerged after talking to negotiators by telephone.

The former patrol officer - who left the force last year for reasons that could not be determined last night - was wanted on assault charges stemming from an incident a few weeks ago, Howard County police said.
