Phillies update

Though still mired in last place in the NL East, the Phillies had shown signs of life by winning five in a row going into last night. Their problems this season begin with the bats. They had scored 371 runs before yesterday, the lowest total in the majors. Their 80 homers were the second-fewest behind Minnesota (70). They're also the only team in the division with a losing record at home (20-22). Each start by Ashby, a free agent after the season with no intention of re-signing, attracts a number of scouts. There were plenty of them at Camden Yards on June 11, when he allowed seven runs and 12 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He was no match for Mussina, who limited the Phillies to two runs in eight innings in a 7-2 victory. Ashby served up three homers, to Jeff Conine, Mike Bordick and Will Clark. The Orioles took two of three from the Phillies, losing the opener, 9-5, before defeating Schilling, 11-4. The former Oriole gave up seven runs and 10 hits in five innings.
