2 hurt when powerboat hits object on Elk River

PORT HERMAN - Police are investigating a boat accident that injured two people in the Elk River in Cecil County early yesterday.

Six people were in the 20-foot Bayliner when it pulled out of the Port Herman marina between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. yesterday. Not long afterward, the boat struck something and the impact injured two on board, said John Surrick, spokesman for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

The Coast Guard called Natural Resources police at about 5:45 a.m. Officers located the boat shortly after 6 a.m. at the mouth of the Susquehanna River. Police don't know if the boat drifted that distance or was driven there.

Jacqueline R. Pusztay, 18, of Ashton, Pa., was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center with head injuries. The boat's operator, Garrett R. Catalano, 29, of Wilmington, Del., was taken to Harford Memorial Hospital with what appeared to be a broken leg, police said.
