Mariners update

The much-improved Mariners entered last night two games out of first place in the AL West despite having the league's third-best record. They ranked second in run differential and had won eight of their last 11 only to be overshadowed by the division-leading Oakland A's seven-game win streak. The Mariners have won five consecutive series, the last series loss coming in a three-game sweep by the Orioles in Camden Yards, May 23-25. DH Edgar Martinez was the league's Player of the Month in May and has hit in 40 of his last 45 games. Martinez, Alex Rodriguez and Jay Buhner have combined for more RBIs than any other three AL teammates. Once known for a combustible bullpen, the Mariners are 34-3 when leading after six innings; however, they have won only one of 24 games when trailing after six.
