A Baltimore County teen apparently drowned yesterday after jumping off a bridge over Liberty Reservoir in Carroll County, state police said.

The 16-year-old, whose identity was withheld pending notification of relatives, was with four other Carroll and Baltimore County males when he jumped from the Deer Park Road bridge shortly after 5 p.m. and surfaced, tried to swim to shore and went underwater, said Detective Russ Fritz of the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.

Tfc. Andrew A. Eways of the Westminster barracks said the distance from the bridge to the water was more than 40 feet and the water was believed to be several feet deep. Police said the boys had been jumping from the bridge for about 15 minutes before the incident.

Eways said one of the boys entered the water from an embankment and pulled the victim to shore, where he performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation while another companion ran to the road and flagged down a motorist.

Eways said the motorist called 911 and a medic crew from Gamber Volunteer Fire Company responded and continued CPR until arriving at Carroll County General Hospital in Westminster, where the teen was pronounced dead a short time later.

The other boys were transported to the barracks, where they gave statements, Eways said.

Fritz said information given to him and other police officers indicated that no foul play was involved and that the incident was being considered an accidental drowning pending the outcome of an autopsy.
