Cheers for cherry shake

Your little ones will love the fruits of their labor when they whip up a Maraschino Cherry Shake. Drain 1 (10-ounce) jar maraschino cherries in a colander in a bowl. Measure 3 tablespoons of the cherry juice and set aside. (You can save the remaining juice for another use.) Cut cherries into small pieces and combine with juice and 3 cups vanilla ice cream in a blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Pour into 2 (12-ounce) glasses. Top with whipped topping and whole cherries. Other kid-friendly recipes are available for free from the Cherry Marketing Institute, P.O. Box 30285, Dept. Kids, Lansing, Mich. 48909-7785.

Going for garlic

Americans are eating twice as much garlic as they did in 1989, says the U.S. Department of Agriculture. So join the pungent trend and check out the freshly harvested garlic from Calvert's Gift Organic Farm in Sparks. Five varieties of the bulb are available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays at the Hunt Valley Farmers' Market, Hunt Valley Mall parking lot, Shawan Road side, and from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturdays at the Bel Air Farmers' Market, Bond and Thomas streets, Mary Risteau Building parking lot.
