June 16, 2000|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

About 22,000 businesses and residences, most of them in Anne Arundel County, lost electricity last night when a storm with high winds, lightning and heavy rain pelted the metropolitan area.

Julie Arthur, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said the storm dumped more than an inch of rain on the area.

A Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. spokeswoman said the storm knocked out power to about 10,000 customers in northern Anne Arundel; about 5,000 in Annapolis and Prince George's County; about 3,600 in Howard County; about 2,100 in Baltimore; about 700 in Baltimore County; about 330 in Harford County, and about 270 in Carroll County. Power was expected to be restored to most of the customers by noon today.
