"Seafood by the bucket" for large groups, crabs, shrimp, chicken: Shorelines Seafood, 1034 Route 3 North, Gambrills; 410-721-7767. Calling ahead is recommended. Hours: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Doubly delicious desserts: Double T-Diner, Mountain Road and Ritchie Highway, Glen Burnie. 410-766-9669. Open 24 hours.

In addition, you can always get fresh vegetables for platters or put together a fruit salad with a stop at a roadside market.

Maybe this is the summer to try a "progressive picnic." Start at any of the locations above, buy one item. Then hit the next location of your choice, buying a different item. Keep on until you've found all the food you need. Don't forget the beverages, and -- unless you're sticking to finger food -- utensils.
