Harry Baxter Dougherty, 90, grocery owner

Harry Baxter Dougherty Sr., a grocer and member of various service organizations, died of a heart attack Thursday at Carroll County General Hospital in Westminster. He was 90.

For more than 35 years, Mr. Dougherty owned and operated Dougherty's Grocery in Taneytown, later called Dougherty's Superette.

The Detour native was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Taneytown, where he served on the church council.

Mr. Dougherty had served as president of Taneytown's Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce and volunteer fire company, in addition to the Western Maryland Shrine Club.

He was also a member of the Elks Club, the Taneytown Rod and Gun Club, the Carroll County Democratic Club and several other groups.

Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Trinity Evangelical.

Mr. Dougherty is survived by his wife, Bessie Dougherty, whom he married in 1933; his son, Harry B. Dougherty Jr. of Taneytown; a brother, Kenneth Dougherty of Biglerville, Pa.; sisters Mary Anders of Woodsboro and Annabelle Bohn of Mount Wolf, Pa.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
