Probe clears officers who shot robbery suspect

June 09, 2000|BY A SUN STAFF WRITER

Police officers involved in the fatal shooting in March of a 24-year-old robbery suspect outside a Brooklyn Park Pizza Hut did not act inappropriately, the county state's attorney's office has decided.

Officers Steven Thomas and Robert Vane shot Gary Beemer Jr. after he pointed what appeared to be a shotgun at them while leaving the restaurant, according to police. The weapon proved to be a fake - a construction leveling tool with a pipe attached.

Police said Beemer had used the contraption to hold up the Pizza Hut. An employee hiding in a back room used a cell phone to call police. Police said that Beemer ignored orders to drop his weapon and pointed it at the officers.

The state's attorney's office sent its finding to the Police Department last week.
