Arts organizations awarded more than $277,000 in grants

Howard County arts organizations will receive $277,889 in state grants for fiscal year 2001 as part of the Maryland Arts Awards.

The funding is part of about $9.6 million recommended by the Maryland State Arts Council and approved by Gov. Parris N. Glendening. The money will be used to support general operations of arts organizations, ongoing programs and projects, community arts development and new initiative projects that benefit underserved artists and audiences.

Grants were awarded based on artistic merit, administrative ability, financial stability, service to the community and involvement of Maryland artists and audiences.

The organizations receiving grants are: African Art Museum of Maryland, the Bach Society of BaltimoreInc., Candlelight Concert Society Inc., Citizens for the Arts in Maryland Foundation, Columbia Center for Theatrical Arts, Columbia Festival of the Arts, the Columbia Orchestra, Columbia Pro CantareLtd., Ellicott City Ballet Guild, Eva Anderson Dancers Ltd., Howard Community College Education Foundation for Rep Stage, Howard County Arts Council, Howard County Ballet, Howard County Center for the Arts, Howard County Center of African American Culture, Howard County Poetry and Literature Society, Hua ShaChinese Dance Theater, Kinetics Dance Theater, Maryland Youth Symphony Orchestra and Sundays at Three.
