Mets update

The Orioles return to New York at the wrong time against the wrong team. The previously underachieving Mets had won 11 of their last 15 before yesterday's 15-5 loss to Tampa Bay and have improved their four-year interleague record to 30-22, second-best in either league. Starting pitching has sparked the Mets' recent surge, as the rotation entered yesterday 8-1 with a 3.42 ERA in the last 15 games. Former Oriole Armando Benitez is riding a high, having gone 13 consecutive outings without allowing a run. In that 13-inning span, he has converted seven saves and struck out 18. At the same time, left-hander John Franco is unscored upon in 12 of his last 13 appearances. Tonight's game pairs next winter's two most attractive free-agent pitchers, Mussina and Hampton. Since a poor start, Hampton has righted himself with better control but has still walked 42 compared to 48 strikeouts in 77 innings. The Mets don't know who'll start for them tomorrow, but are certain that pro golfers Davis Love III, Barry Cheesman and Mike Hulbert will take batting practice beforehand.
