Historical society's lunch talk to focus on preserving heirlooms

The Historical Society of Carroll County is holding monthly box lunch talks, to be held at noon on the second Tuesday of the month at the Shellman House, 206 E. Main St., Westminster.

On June 13, society Curator of Collections Catherine Baty will discuss "Preserving Family Heirlooms," how textiles deteriorate and what can be done to help preserve them.

Participants should bring a lunch; beverage and dessert will be provided. Admission is $1 for nonmembers, free for historical society members. Reservations are recommended.

Foundation gives funds for arts, sports, social services

The Community Foundation of Carroll County has announced its grant awards for this year.

Bear Branch Nature Center/Friends of Hashawha received $750 for a demonstration pond at the center; Carroll County Arts Council got $500 for the Children's Scholarship Program and another $500 for the Musical Instrument Bank; Carroll County Land Trust, $1,000 for Outreach Arena; Carroll Transit System, $1,000 for vehicles; Christmas In April, $500 for the 2000 event.

The foundation gave Family & Children's Services $1,000 for West End Adult Day Care Services; the Historical Society of Carroll County, $500 for summer school program for middle school pupils; Human Services Program, $1,000 for a van and $500 for the Month of Sundays concerts; Literacy Council of Carroll County, $750 for tutoring programs.

Maryland Cooperative Extension was awarded $150 for youth sponsorship to attend camp; Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland, $700 for meals; North Carroll Girl's Fast Pitch Inc., $500 for equipment; Rape Crisis Intervention Service, $500 for counseling services.

Other recipients were Special Olympics, $250 for the Carroll County program; Sykesville Group Shelter Home Inc., $500 for a van; Taneytown Lions Little League, $782.50 for player dues; Woman's Club of Westminster Inc., $250 for Westminster tot lot; and YMCA of Carroll County, $1,000 for the Character Club for 8- to 12-year-olds.

Family center offers kids `summer adventure' camp

The Carroll County Family Center will hold its summer adventure camp for children June 19-23.

Activities include: June 19, trip to Kids Kingdom and picnic and swimming at Codorus State Park in Hanover, Pa.; June 20, Safari Day with games, activities and lunch at the center; June 21, a trip to Drummer Boy Campground in Gettysburg, Pa.; June 22, Wild West Day with games and crafts at the center; and June 23, a trip to Six Flags Park.

Registration for the week is $20 for anyone age 4 and older.
