Water-quality hot line offers regular updates of county waterways

The county Department of Health has opened a water-quality results Web site and phone line, offering weekly updates on fecal coliform counts in county waterways.

The service will provide averaged weekly readings at 78 sites sampled by the health department, information on emergency closings of creeks to recreational use, and phone numbers to call to report water-quality problems.

Fecal coliform is a disease-causing intestinal bacteria coming from all warm-blooded animals. It is used as an indicator of water quality because it is easily detected.

Information will be available through the service on bacteria counts from Rock Creek, Stoney Creek, Bodkin Creek, Magothy River, Severn River, the Annapolis area, South River, Rhode River and Herring Bay.

Weekly results will be available until Labor Day at 410-222-7999and www.aahealth.org.
