Relay puts the fun into fund-raiser for serious cause

THEY CALL themselves names like Happy Homemakers, Claus for the Cause, and Candy for a Cure - teams mostly made up of people from our community who will be participating in the Relay for Life beginning Friday evening on the grounds of Lindale-Brooklyn Park Middle School.

From 6 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. Saturday, team members will be taking turns on the school track in an overnight fund-raiser for the battle against cancer, and to remember its victims.

"It is really kind of a fun experience, yet such an emotional thing, too," said Lynn Marie McGowan, captain of the Happy Homemakers - all members of the Woman's Club of Linthicum Heights.

McGowan said she chose the team name because, while the club covers a wide spectrum in age and interests, "all are homemakers and they are happy to participate in such a worthwhile cause."

Eleven women are scheduled to walk the track and five will spend the night on cots and chaise longues in a tent and under a canopy. To raise money, they are selling baked goods and fruit beverages. And McGowan, a certified massage therapist, is raffling off a one-hour massage.

Other club members, Virginia Kuhn and Anne Skillman, recruited 12 women to manage the cancer survivor and team registration desk and operate a relay "store." The group also made ribbon sashes to be worn by cancer survivors attending the event.

Joyce Gigliotti represents the Rotary Club. Her circus-themed team, Candy for a Cure, will raise money by selling cotton candy and peanuts. Half of the club members plan to walk throughout the night.

Claus for a Cause is headed by Cheryl Reisinger, a cancer survivor of 20 years. She said she has recruited 15 relatives and friends, many from St. Philip Neri parish, to join her team.

Their campsite will look like Christmas, she said. Decorations will include a Christmas tree with photos and names of people they want to remember who have or had cancer. They plan to enjoy a Christmas dinner during the event, and Santa Claus and several of his elves will be there, too.

Jim and Judy Cifala are co-chairs of the local relay event, with a planning committee that includes Kuhn, Skillman, Gigliotti, Reisinger, Bev and Doug Dale, Rick and Karen Biagiotti, Tina Hadjis, Glen Haller and Beth Sandifer.

Last year's first Linthicum relay generated so much enthusiasm that the number of teams participating this year has quadrupled to nearly 50. Area schools, churches, youth groups and other organizations are involved. It is the second of three relay events scheduled around the county.

The public is invited, and cancer survivors who have not registered are welcome to sign in Friday. Registration will take place from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be a survivors' reception at 5 p.m., with refreshments courtesy of North Arundel Hospital.

The 6 p.m. opening ceremonies will include remarks by the Cifalas; county schools Superintendent Carol S. Parham, serving as honorary chairwoman for the three Arundel relays; and Susan Hoffmaster, cancer survivor. The Cifalas and Parham will thank sponsors and give them plaques.

After the speakers, Gigliotti will read survivors' names and the number of years since their diagnosis. They will make the first lap around the track. Caregivers will join in for the second lap, and all teams will join them on the track to begin the third circuit.

At 7:30 p.m., judging for the best campsite will be held, and at 9 p.m. a luminary ceremony will begin, to honor those lost to cancer and those who are survivors.

Thirteen groups are lined up to entertain on stage throughout the event. They include a magician, the Beauty Shop Trio, Country Side Kickers and Irish dancers.

The closing ceremony will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Church flea market

The annual flea market and auction sponsored by Friendship Church of the Brethren will take place rain or shine from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the church hall, 217 Mansion Road in North Linthicum.

The auction of a variety of items, including antiques, will begin at 10:30 a.m., and baked goods will be sold.

Dawn Chamberlain, publicity chairwoman, said flea market tables are available for $10.

Strawberry Festival

It is Strawberry Festival time again at Linthicum Heights United Methodist Church, 200 School Lane. This year's festival, its 53rd, will be held from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday in the church's Fellowship Hall.

As usual, there will be a snack supper plus strawberry shortcake or strawberries and ice cream. Also for sale will be baked goods, attic treasures and items for children.

A plant table will be an added feature this year.

Admission is free, so come and browse. Proceeds are used for mission and church projects.

Bello Machre expanding

Bello Machre is Gaelic for "home of my heart." The organization operates 47 homes in Anne Arundel County for individuals with special needs to live as independently as possible.

It plans to open another home in Ferndale in August, and is looking for someone to live in full time to supervise the three resident clients and staff.

The job is open to a man or woman over the age of 18, with a high school diploma and a clean driving record for the past three years.

Private quarters will be provided, including a kitchen, family room, bedroom and bathroom.

Herb club trip

Friendly Thyme Herb Club is having its regularly scheduled business meeting at 10 a.m., Friday at Ferndale-Linthicum Senior Center, 7205 Baltimore-Annapolis Blvd. A social time with refreshment begins at 9:15 a.m.

After the business session, members will head to Willow Oak Herb Farm in Severn for a noon luncheon and tour.
