Athletics update

Improving to .500 last night, Oakland is onlytwo games out of first place in the AL West, but stuck at the bottom within a competitive division. The A's lead the AL with 298 runs, but went into last night tied for last in team batting average at .261. They've been relying on the long ball, with their 73 home runs rankingthird in the league. These teams played three games in Oakland last month, with the Orioles winning twice. Two of the games were decided by one run, the other by two. Johnson didn't get the decision in the Orioles' 3-2, 11-inning loss on April 23. He allowed only one run in six innings before Mike Trombley blew the save by allowing a home run in the ninth. Tim Worrell, who's no longer with the club, absorbed the loss. Mulder went seven innings in that game, giving up two runs and four hits. Olivares was beaten in the opener, allowing five earned runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings.
