A man attempted to rob a gas station in the Columbia Crossing Shopping Center during the evening rush hour yesterday before he took cash from a nearby optical store and was arrested after a brief chase on Route 175, according to Howard County police.

Investigators said the suspect, who has reportedly refused to identify himself, pretended to have a gun in the attempted holdup of the Amoco station and the robbery of Guaranteed Best Optical.

He fled on Route 175 in an older model Chevrolet with Howard County police in pursuit. The man hit a tree near Interstate 95 and was arrested, police said. The investigation is continuing.
