20 HCC students receive awards for achievements

Howard Community College has honored 20 outstanding students.

Teresa Schreyerwon the Gay C. HeitlingerAward.

Marie Kittelbergerwon the Alumnus of the Year Award.

Ivena Colbertwon Student Employee of the Year. Jonathan Andrews won Lab Assistant of the Year.

Troy Goodman won Outstanding Support Services Student of the Year. Pinett Siekwon Peer Tutor Award. Joshua Howon the Wall Street Journal Award.

Several students received awards for academic achievement: Susan Coardfor the health sciences division; Andrews for science; Anna Hauschfor technology; Rob Rahmerfor mathematics; Jonathan Raticanfor social science; Mary Ann Thomas for early childhood development; and Denise LeannaCumorfor the arts and humanities division.

Students received awards for extracurricular activities. Ratican and Rizwan Khalil received the Student Government Special Recognition Award.

Nina Weiss received the Times Student Newspaper Outstanding Service Award.

Keith Fanjoy received the Newspaper Recognition Award.

Wale Oshinnaiye and Daniel Damien Brown III received student programming board awards.

Brian Hines won Male Athlete of the Year and Karen Thorn received Female Athlete of the Year.

HCC has received a $5,000 grant from the George Preston Marshall Foundation to purchase playground equipment for the Children's Learning Center, scheduled to open in the fall.

HCC is accepting registration for summer

Howard Community College is accepting registration for HCC's summer continuing education classes.

Offerings will include classes in computers, languages, finance and investments, and programs for children in elementary, middle and high school.

Registration hours are 8:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.

School board to hold meeting on 2001 budgets

The Howard County Board of Education will hold a public meeting to approve the fiscal year 2001 operating and capital budgets and the 2002-2006 capital improvement program at 9 a.m. June 1 in the boardroom of the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.

The Board of Education will hold meetings at 4 p.m. tomorrow and June 8 in the boardroom.

The meetings will begin with a "Listening Post."
