Bureau of Recreation sponsoring overnight trip to New York

The Carroll County Bureau of Recreation is sponsoring an overnight "Big Apple Days and Night" trip June 10-11.

Cost is $198 a person for double occupancy; other rates are available. Cost includes staying at the Novotel Hotel at Broadway and 52nd Street.

Spaces are available. The bus leaves Westminster Town Mall at 7 a.m. June 10 and returns at 9 p.m. June 11.

Nature center schedules variety of activities

Bear Branch Nature Center holds numerous club meetings and activities.

Hug a Tree: At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday for children ages 3 to 6. After a discussion on why trees are important, take a short hike for tree identification. Cost is $1 for members and $2 for nonmembers.

Volunteer Gardening Day: From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday for ages 12 to adult (younger 12 with an adult). Help is needed planting, weeding and mulching. Homeowners can pick up gardening tips and youths can earn community service hours.

Carve-in with the Carroll Carvers: 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Come and observe, or bring your own tools and project and learn.

A day canoe trip on the Susquehanna or Monocacy rivers will be taken from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 28. No experience is necessary. Ages 8 to adult are welcome; children younger than 15 must be with an adult. Bring lunch.

The center is at 300 John Owings Road, Westminster. Registration is required.

Finksburg farm to hold Saddle Up America event

Full Moon Farm in Finksburg will hold an open house as part of Saddle Up America from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 29.

Saddle Up America is a national celebration of the horse. Anyone interested in learning to ride, watching equine events, or riding on vacation is welcome.

Full Moon will hold a parade of breeds, offer pony rides, barn tours, hay wagon rides and other events. Crafts people will exhibit and sell their work. Visitors will get a Saddle Up Starter Kit with information on buying a horse, safety, picking a riding instructor and riding attire. The farm is on Louisville Road between Deer Park and Bollinger Mill roads.
