Middle school pupils to exhibit ceramic art

Pupils from 21 middle schools in Baltimore and Baltimore County will take part in a ceramic artwork exhibition opening this week at the Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. building as part of an interdisciplinary project to enhance reading and writing skills.

Sponsored by the National Museum of Ceramic Art, a Baltimore arts organization, the exhibit stems from a program that includes afternoon ceramic clubs taught by art teachers. Children in the program conduct research that includes reading and writing about the subject of their artwork.

The exhibit will open Wednesday in the BGE lobby, Liberty and Lexington streets, and will run through fall.

Warren fourth-graders do biographies of relatives

COCKEYSVILLE - In a project that combined reading, writing and research, fourth-graders at Warren Elementary School put together detailed biographies of relatives and celebrated by presenting their reports at an Author's Tea on the school lawn.

The recent project included taped interviews, a computer outline and a review of each pupil's work-in-progress by fellow pupils. Each child produced a bound, illustrated biography.

Warren Elementary's literacy program includes a writer's workshop in which guest authors visit the school to discuss writing and work with the children.
