The 10th Race

The Preakness Stakes

WHO SHOULD WIN

The Preakness is all about figuring out who will run second. Fusaichi Pegasus appears invincible. Red Bullet will be the crowd's choice -- and he is a deserving one -- but High Yield may be the better bet. He's had only two bad races in his career and both were at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. He figures to love Pimlico and is the kind of horse who might bounce back from a poor Derby to run well here. Captain Steve is another who had trouble in Kentucky -- he was bumped badly in the stretch -- and may run better today.

HOW THEY'LL RUN

Hugh Hefner will gun to the lead from the rail, along with Hal's Hope from the outside post. Red Bullet, High Yield, Captain Steve, Snuck In and Fusaichi Pegasus should settle in comfortably behind them, with Impeachment trailing the field. When they reach the turn for home, Pegasus should be flying, with High Yield, Red Bullet and Captain Steve fighting for second. Impeach- ment's late run is likely to fall short.

WHAT TO BET

Note: Each horse's program number -- which you need to use at the betting window -- is listed in parentheses.

$2 bettor: $2 exacta of Fusaichi Pegasus (7) over EITHER High Yield (5) or Captain Steve (6).

Risk taker: $20 exacta of Fusaichi Pegasus (7) over Red Bullet (4).

Sun long shot: This isn't a race for playing long shots, but if you insist, try High Yield (5) to win.
