Rangers update

The Rangers won the American League West in a walk last year, but things have not gone so well in 2000. Though the absence of two-time MVP Juan Gonzalez has not kept the club from returning to the top of the league batting rankings, inconsistent production and so-so pitching have conspired to drop Texas behind the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics in the division standings. It's not for lack of effort by perennial All-Star catcher Ivan Rodriguez, who ranks among the league leaders in virtually every relevant offensive department. Entering yesterday's games, he was tied for the league lead with 16 home runs, ranked third in batting average at .367 and was fourth with 40 RBIs. There has not been a Triple Crown winner since Red Sox great Carl Yastrzemski in 1967, but Rodriguez is a candidate. He was the American League MVP last year and only seems to be getting better.
