CHESTERTOWN - Washington College, which has won more NCAA tournament games than any active Division III school, routed tournament newcomer Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 21-8, in yesterday's first round of the national tournament.

Sophomore Craig Rentch (Annapolis), whose eight goals lifted No.6 Washington to a 15-10 upset of No.1 and defending national champion Salisbury State a week and a half ago, scored five times as the Shoremen extended their winning streak to five and improved to 12-3.

Washington, the 1998 national champion, travels to Salisbury (15-1) on Sunday for a quarterfinal game.

Senior midfielder J.D. Radebaugh (Boys' Latin) scored twice in the opening 50 seconds, and Washington raced out to a 5-0 lead with only 7 minutes, 1 second elapsed.

"Our theme this week has been to respect our opponents," said Radebaugh, who finished with three goals and three assists. "We learned last year, in the loss here to Middlebury, not to underestimate anyone. Today, we played hard from the beginning."

Washington, which has won 23 NCAA tournament games, was ousted last year in the quarterfinals by eventual runner-up Middlebury, 16-7.

The Shoremen have reached the finals nine times, including a string of three straight from 1996 to 1998.

Radebaugh, whose 36 goals and 53 points are team highs, won the opening face-off and scored just seven seconds into play. Washington controlled the ensuing draw, and 43 seconds later, Radebaugh, on the look from Kevin Dorst, scored again for a quick 2-0 lead.

Radebaugh also had an assist in Washington's 5-0 start.

RPI's Ben Terzulli ended the shutout with an unassisted goal 9:17 into the game.

Washington's lead was 12-3 at halftime, and early in the third quarter Washington coach J.B. Clarke was playing his bench.
