Reception to honor award-winning staff, teachers in county

Howard County Public Schools will hold an In Honor of Excellence Reception from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. May 17 at River Hill High School.

Recognition will be given to the nominees and recipients of the Agnes MeyerOutstanding Teacher Award, the ShirleyR. MullinixAward of Excellence, the Maryland Teacher of the Year Award, the SallieMaeFirst Class Teacher Award, the Distinguished Assistant Award and the Outstanding Office Professional Recognition Award.

Superintendent Hickey to be honored at events

Howard County Public Schools will celebrate the 16-year tenure of departing Superintendent Michael E. Hickeywith several events during the month.

On May 17, a Fine Arts Salute will be held from noon to 1 p.m. at Wilde Lake High School and an afternoon tea will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Mount Hebron High School.

On May 18, a reception will be held for Hickey at 10 a.m. at Ellicott Mills at Bonnie Branch, and a dance recital will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Hammond High School.

Students will dedicate a bench in Centennial Park to Hickey at noon May 19.

Education board to hold hearings on policy changes

The county Board of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City, will hold public hearings at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow on proposed changes to Policy 2060: grading, reporting, promotion, retention and acceleration, kindergarten-eighth grade; Policy 10124: academic eligibility for extracurricular activities; Policy 3451: alcohol, drugs, noncontrolled substances and inhalants.

People who wish to testify are asked to limit their presentations to three minutes and to provide 15 copies of their statements.

Mathematics instructional materials will be on display from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through tomorrow in the lobby at the Department of Education, 10910 Route 108, Ellicott City.
