UMBC women win NEC title on goal at :05

Renee Tirocchi (Catonsville) scored with five seconds remaining yesterday to lift UMBC over Monmouth, 13-12, in come-from-behind fashion for its third consecutive Northeast Conference Women's Lacrosse Championship.

The Retrievers (10-7) relied on a balanced attack and received multiple-goal performances from five players. Shannon Gallup, Loree Miller and Jamie Gerhart each scored three, and Tirocchi and Ashley Staines added two goals apiece.

Staines, who scored a Northeast Conference Tournament-record eight goals in UMBC's semifinal victory over Sacred Heart, was named the most valuable player of the event. .

Monmouth (14-3) controlled the first-half tempo and took a 6-3 lead with a 5-1 run midway through the first half.
