State has program to help low-income homebuyers

A new program has been developed by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development to help low- and moderate-income homebuyers afford down payments and settlement costs through the Maryland Mortgage Program (MMP).

The Downpayment and Settlement Expense Loan Program provides loans of up to $5,000 interest-free and deferred until the mortgage is paid off or the home sold.

Other changes in interest rates, eligible homes and priority funding areas for first-time, low- and moderate-income buyers also were announced.

In Carroll County, the maximum income for eligibility in the first-time home-buying program is $64,300 for a family of one or two, and $73,945 for three or more. The maximum purchase price of an existing home is $140,634.

The interest rate for MMP mortgages has dropped from 7.5 percent to 6.9 percent. Income limits have been raised and new homes, as well as existing homes, are included in some programs.
