Young deer found running through BWI

Animal broke window, climbed up escalator

A young deer crashed its way into Baltimore-Washington International Airport yesterday.

The animal -- described as the size of a large dog -- jumped through a glass window in the lower level near the Pier B baggage claim, and managed to run up an escalator into the passenger promenade about 9: 45 a.m., said airport spokesman John White.

"You don't see that every day," White said.

The male deer got to a gate before turning around suddenly and heading toward the observation deck, where it was cornered by Maryland Transportation Authority police.

County police and animal-control officers were called for help.

The deer was tranquilized, then euthanized because of injuries it suffered jumping through the window, said Officer Charles Ravenell, who added that the animal was bleeding severely from cuts and also had signs of internal bleeding.

No human was injured.

White noted that the incident occurred after the morning rush.
