Eastbound span to close Sunday for 26th annual Bay Bridge walk

May 02, 2000

Get ready for a traffic jam. The two-lane eastbound span of the Bay Bridge will be closed for much of Sunday for the 26th annual Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk -- an event that draws about 50,000 people a year.

Eastbound traffic will be routed onto the three-lane parallel span beginning at 5 a.m., and buses will begin shuttling walkers to the bridge at 8: 30 a.m. from parking lots at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold and Chesapeake Business Park in Stevensville.

A $1 donation will be requested to defray the cost of bus service for participants ages 6 and older. Many of the buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts.

"We are advising participants to arrive before 11 a.m.," said Thomas L. Osborne, executive secretary of the Maryland Transportation Authority. "Even if parking should remain open after noon, which is unlikely, we cannot admit walkers to the bridge after 1 p.m."

The walk will be canceled in the event of severe weather or high winds.
