The Central Maryland chapter of the March of Dimes raised close to $700,000 yesterday in its WalkAmerica 2000 event, a spokeswoman said last night.

About 6,000 walkers participated in the fund-raising event at five locations in the metropolitan Baltimore area, said Gayle V. Economos, a public relations consultant to the organization.

"The money goes to support local programs," Economos said.
