Orioles' ups and downs

April 30, 2000|By Joe Strauss

Chuck McElroy - DOWN - Right now he's the symbol of Syd Thrift's inconsistent bullpen. The Orioles owe him $2.6 million through next season. That buys patience, but how much?

Harold Baines - UP- Broke out of a two-week malaise last week. Overabundance of left-handed bats may cut into his time, however. Brady Anderson, Will Clark and Albert Belle have made guest appearances as DH.

Albert Belle - DOWN- Will soon be appearing in remake of "It Happens Every Spring." Right now, he's behind the fastball and ahead of the curve. Payback ahead.

Delino DeShields - EVEN- Second baseman crushed the White Sox for nine RBIs in four-game series. But defensively, he remains a wild card.

The Erickson Zone - UP- Arthroscopic elbow surgery has so far kept Scott Erickson from taking the mound at Camden Yards, but as People magazine attests, the innings monster looks great in the lobby.

Roster intrigue - DOWN - Designating long reliever Tim Worrell to create space for a waiver claim left an already shaky staff undermanned. Player-for-pitcher moves at this time of year are always dangerous. Bullpen setting -- extra crispy.
