The lesson apparent in Northeast's 3-1 win over North County yesterday afternoon was this: nothing comes easy in Anne Arundel softball -- under any circumstances.

The No. 5-ranked Knights visited Northeast with an inexperienced, patchwork lineup, minus all of their seniors, who were absent from the makeup game, said coach Brian Love, due to "a strange case of the senior flu."

With four late JV call-ups and a lineup of one freshman, five sophomore sand three juniors, the Knights didn't surrender until Northeast pitcher Rachel Herrick got Heather Frye to line out to center with the bases full in the top of the seventh.

"I'm not happy with the circumstances, but I am happy with the effort," said Love. " The kids did a nice job -- the effort was there and the heart was there."

A pitchers' dual was also there.

Herrick and North County sophomore Brittany Boyd kept the game scoreless through three innings before the Eagles (9-2, 8-2 in Anne Arundel) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 2-0 lead.
