Teen shot while visiting friend

A 13-year-old boy was in serious condition late last night at Johns Hopkins Hospital after being shot in the head, Howard County police reported.

The victim, whose identity was being withheld pending the notification of his parents, was shot yesterday afternoon with a .22-caliber rifle in an apartment in the 3100 block of Pine Orchard Lane in Ellicott City.

Although details of the shooting were not available yesterday, the boy apparently was with three friends playing video games inside an apartment about 3: 15 p.m. when he was shot, police said.

"At this time, it appears that it was accidental," said Officer Lisa Myers, a police spokeswoman. She said the boy does not live in the apartment and was visiting a 16-year-old friend.

Detectives were questioning the victim's friends last night, Myers said, to determine what had happened and who owns the gun.
