The Western Maryland College board of trustees has named Joan Develin Coley as interim president while it conducts a search for a successor to Robert H. Chambers, who resigned last week.

Coley, provost and dean of the faculty, had served as acting president since December, while Chambers completed a six-month sabbatical. Chambers was president for 16 years and was the college's seventh president.

Coley joined Western Maryland College in 1973. She was appointed chairwoman of the education department in 1986 and dean of graduate affairs in 1992 before becoming the school's first female provost and dean of the faculty.
