Devil Rays update

The Devil Rays own a winning record against only two teams in their three-year existence, the Detroit Tigers and the Orioles. They are 14-10 overall and 8-4 at Camden Yards, including a traumatic three-game sweep last April that drove manager Ray Miller to openly question his well-paid team's character. Recent acquisition Dwight Gooden won't pitch in the series after contributing to one of the Rays' two shutouts in his debut. Prior to Gooden's six innings against the Tigers Saturday, the rotation had completed five innings in only one of seven starts, good for a 15.52 ERA. The Rays' bullpen has thrown more innings than the rotation over the past 10 games. The Devil Rays (5-8) have invested much in a raw-boned lineup but have sacrificed pitching. Before yesterday's 7-6 comeback win, they were third in the league in hitting but were only tied for eighth in runs scored. Their 7.06 ERA is almost double league-leading Seattle.
